Landscape Your Garden (and increase the value of your home!)

Updated: Jun 15, 2021

Thinking about making improvements to your home? Maybe you’re considering selling in the next year or two? Well, rather than putting in a new kitchen or adding an extra bedroom or bathroom, why not consider some outdoor improvements such as adding a shed, laying down a patio, putting in some fencing, or adding some sturdy decking?

The garden is the first part of your home that most people want to see, and a beautifully landscaped garden makes a home look well looked after and welcoming. And having your garden professionally landscaped can add a lot of value to your property – in fact, it can add as much as 20% to the overall value of your home. A landscaped garden is very appealing to a new buyer when the time comes for you to consider selling. And many new buyers want an outdoor space they can use for relaxation. But there are certain features in the garden that will add more value than others:

Sheds

Having a large shed is a prerequisite for many buyers – in fact, according to a recent survey, about 82% of people put this at the top of their list. Many people see it as a ‘must-have’ – a perfect spot for hiding all the clutter that is invading a lot of the inside space at home. Also, men like the idea of turning it into a sort of ‘man cave’ – or if the shed is particularly large, it could be turned into another room, helping to expand the living space.

Patios

The second most popular feature in the garden is a patio, according to a recent survey. It can really add value to your home to have a patio professionally laid using high quality materials. And if you put in some smart garden furniture, you’re also adding to your living space.

Fencing

Having secure fencing is another feature that is very popular with people looking for a new home, particularly if they have families and/or pets. Fencing gives you privacy and security – and of course they have a decorative purpose as well. Smart fencing can really set off a garden.

Decking

Decking has been very popular this past summer. It creates a perfect area for social gatherings and acts as a focus point in the garden. We tend to spend more time in the garden than we did about 5 or so years ago, and having well-made decking in your garden helps you get more out of outdoor living.
